What is the keto diet and why is it gaining popularity
It is a high-fat, moderate-protein, low-carbohydrate diet. The standard distribution of calories by GI in this diet is 75% fat 20% protein and only 5% carbohydrates.
There are several advantages to this distribution:
🍎Transition to a state of ketosis.
In a normal diet, the body uses carbohydrates as fuel and stores fat for a rainy day.Essentially, the keto diet mimics starvation and once you run out of calories from the fat you consume, your body switches to breaking down fat stores.
🍎Lowering insulin levels.
Eating fat lowers insulin and blood glucose levels. Insulin is a hormone that tells the body's cells to store energy. When it is low, the rate of fat burning increases.
🍎Lowering ghrelin levels.
Consuming fat lowers ghrelin (the hunger hormone) levels in the blood. Therefore, it is easier to maintain a caloric deficit on keto.
